Arabic and North African Studies (ARANAS) at Al Akhawayn University

The ARANAS program grants academic credits which can be applied to an individual’s degree program in his/her home institution. The Arabic language component is an intensive program involving up to 190 contact hours. Students will experience learning Arabic not only in class and through homework, but also through interaction with students, instructors and staff at the university as well as others outside the university in the community of Ifrane. Immersion activities include information-gathering assignments and reports in Arabic on projects involving the local community.

"ISLAMIC MODERNITIES: TIME AND SPACE"

The Midwest Association for Middle East and Islamic Studies and University of Louisville’s Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies program are pleased to issue a call for papers for the MAMEIS Annual Conference in Louisville, Kentucky, April 16-17, 2015. We welcome submissions from scholars based in the Midwest (broadly conceived) on this year’s theme "Islamic Modernities: Time and Space." Modernity serves as a dynamic lens for viewing a wide range of transformations in Middle Eastern and Islamic societies, even as no generally accepted definition of modernity has yet emerged. The scholarly discussion on modernity has broadened to view this as not only a global, structural transformation centered on Europe, but a process that has created "many modernities," each with its own local vernacular form. Moreover, modernity has been recognized as not only a temporal period, but also a process manifested in spatial relationships that shape, and are shaped by, historical agents. This conference will highlight current research related to theorizing and applying the concept of "modernity" to Middle East and Islamic studies in a broad, interdisciplinary manner.

MAMEIS - the Midwest Association for Middle East and Islamic Studies - is a nonprofit organization which promotes and fosters community among the many scholars of Middle East and Islamic Studies based at institutions throughout the Midwest. MAMEIS is concerned with promoting the study of the Middle East and Islamic world and does not subscribe to any particular religious or political viewpoints or agenda. Our aim is to develop an open forum for discussion of scholarly issues, share news and information about regional events, and support collegial ties among our members.

ARIT SUMMER FELLOWSHIPS FOR INTENSIVE ADVANCED TURKISH LANGUAGE STUDY AT BOĞAZİÇİ UNIVERSITY, ISTANBUL

Application deadline is February 5, 2015

PROGRAM: For summer 2015, the American Research Institute in Turkey will offer full travel and fellowships for approximately 15 advanced students and scholars for participation in the summer program in advanced Turkish language at Boğaziçi University in Istanbul. This intensive program offers the equivalent of one full academic year of study in Turkish at the college level. The fellowships cover round-trip airfare to Istanbul, application and tuition fees, and a maintenance stipend. Full-time students and scholars affiliated at academic institutions are eligible to apply.

To be a fellowship applicant, you must:
 1. Be a citizen, national, or permanent resident of the United States
 2. Be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate level academic program, or be faculty
 3. Have a minimum B average in current program of study; and
 4. Perform at the high-intermediate level on a proficiency-based admissions examination.

Call for Papers: Undergraduate Journal of Middle East Studies

The University of Toronto’s Undergraduate Journal of Middle East Studies is now accepting academic essays and photography whose subject pertains to the study of the Middle East for its 2014-2015 issue. 

Undergraduate students across Canada and abroad are encouraged to submit their work for review. 

Essay submissions must include the name of the undergraduate institution, the percentage of grade received, and a 250-word abstract. Chicago-style submissions are preferred.

Woolf Institute Visiting Fellowship 2016

The Woolf Institute, which specializes in the study of relations between Jews, Christians and Muslims from a multidisciplinary perspective, invites applications for its annual visiting fellowship.

The Fellowship is tenable for a two to three month period that overlaps one of the Cambridge terms 2016:

Lent term: 12 January–11 March 2016

Easter term: 19 April–10 June 2016

The successful candidate will be expected to be involved in a project of academic research, public education or of the arts in an area relevant to the Institute’s work. The Fellow will be asked to present their work at a symposium on the subject of their project proposal.

There is no stipend attached to the Fellowships, but Fellows will be entitled to free accommodation in Cambridge and round-trip travel from their country to Cambridge. They will also have access to the Woolf Institute and Cambridge University libraries.

The Fellowship is available for a postdoctoral scholar of any academic rank, a policymaker or analyst in a relevant area of work, or an artist (writer, painter, photographer, etc.) and will most likely be asked to participate in some of the Institute’s teaching or practice-based activities.
